A top Pakistani general has said the United States should extend its civilian nuclear cooperation beyond India, to include Pakistan. General Ihsahn ul-Haq says such a move would encourage economic growth, that would help defeat extremism and terrorism.

General Ul-Haq accused Washington of being discriminatory when it offered New Delhi a wide-ranging agreement on civilian nuclear cooperation. The general says the US should be open to all countries which meet Specific Standards. This, instead of only considering cooperation with arbitrarily chosen countries. Ul-Haq says his country very much needs nuclear energy to feed its surging economy. He also says the Pakistani government is aiming for a 2,000 percent increase in nuclear energy, over the next 25 years.
