In Sri Lanka, The Tamil Tiger rebel group has said it now sees no other option but to push for an independent state.
Elusive Tiger leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, had earlier pushed for a separate homeland for minority Tamils. But he said on Monday that Sri Lankan Tamils had been cheated by the majority Sinhalese governments and would be fooled no more. The Tigers spent much of their two-decade insurgency fighting for independence, but scaled down demands to a separate homeland within Sri Lanka after a 2002 cease-fire. A new round of peace talks broke down a month ago, and many fear another full-scale war will follow.
