Bush appointed arms control expert John Bolton to the UN job temporarily in August, 2005. Meanwhile, his nomination languished in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, blocked by the Democrats and several Republicans. However, the temporary appointment was scheduled to expire when Congress formally adjourns, no later than early January.
Bolton's initial appointment to the top job at the United Nations was greeted with dismay by many member states.
Facing opposition from key senators, Bolton will leave office in a matter of days. Bush reluctantly accepted his resignation, expressing regret that Bolton did not win Senate confirmation.
US president, George W. Bush said:"I received the resignation of Ambassador John Bolton. I accept it. I'm not happy about it. I think he deserved to be confirmed."
Analysts say Bolton handed his resignation letter to Bush after realizing that his nomination would face harsher prospects in the Congress. Especially following Democrat victories in the midterm legislative elections.
