South African President Thabo Mbeki is optimistic over a stand-off between Sudan and the international community.

Sudan has objected to the deployment of UN troops in the war-torn Darfur region. Mbeki was speaking in Khartoum on Wednesday, after meeting with his Sudanese counterpart Omar el-Bashir. The two leaders focused on the conflict in Darfur and the implementation of a north-south peace deal.

Mbeki said, "Agreement has been reached on almost all questions. So there are some final negotiations that will take place between the United Nations, the African Union and the Sudanese government and I am quite confident that those matters will be resolved. It's really matters of detail. The overall framework has been agreed."
