In New York City, relatives and friends of the 9/11 victims also held a series of ceremonies to remember those lost in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.
The sixth anniversary of 9-11 dawned drizzly and dark in New York City, as if to match the mood of many people.
The intermittent rainfall did not stop hundreds of relatives of 9/11 victims and survivors attending the commemoration ceremony.
Six years on, the sadness of losing loved ones still haunts them.
Hector Garcia, a daughter lost on 9/11, said, "After six years the thing happened, it's almost the same like the first day. For us, for our family, for everybody that lost a family over here as yesterday, nothing changed."
Patricia Reilly, a sister lost on 9/11, said, "I come seeking peace, but I think until the mayor and the memorial foundation listen to the families and what's the right way of remembering those who were killed, at that time I'll have peace."
It's the first year the memorial service was not held at the world trade center site, but rather a small park nearby. Four moments of silence were observed to mark the times the hijacked planes crashed into the Twin Towers and when they collapsed.
And representatives of relatives of victims, firefighters, police and medical staff read out the names of victims.
Visitors from across the world also joined in the memorial service.
