Chinese and US officials have rung a bell of harmony on Capitol Hill to mark the International Day of Peace.

Organizers say they plan to show the bell around the world in a journey called "Olympic Peace Trip," and will eventually bring the bell to China on the eve of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Attending the ceremony were Minister Zheng Zeguang from the Chinese Embassy to the US, and John Conyers, Chairman of the US House Judiciary Committee.

Minister Zheng said the concept of world harmony reflects the core value of China's domestic and foreign policy. He said China will continue to develop peacefully and contribute to creating a harmonious world.

Conyers said the event aims to urge everyone to enhance friendships and cooperation through the peace movement. He also expressed appreciation for China's efforts in promoting world peace.

The bell, known as the Harmony Bell for Peace, was crafted in China and given as a gift from China to mark the UN's 60th anniversary in 2005.

This ceremony was organized by non-governmental advocacy groups including the World Harmony Foundation, World Peace Charity Foundation and the Global Family Foundation.
