US-China Strategic Economic Dialogue promotes bilateral ties

US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson has praised the role of the US-China Strategic Economic Dialogue in building stronger relationships and establishing constructive channels of communication.

Paulson will lead a delegation to Beijing next week for the third meeting of the dialogue.

Paulson told the Asia Society on Wednesday the dialogue was launched last year in light of the importance and complexity of the US-China relations. He says the mechanism has helped keep the economic relationship on an even keel, even in times of tension. And Paulson says there is still much room for cooperation.

Henry Paulson said, "As globalisation has advanced and economies have become more tightly integrated, worries about the effects of foreign competition through trade, or through foreign investment, have led to a rise in economic nationalism and protectionist sentiments. US and Chinese leaders both face this challenge."
