In a statement issued by his spokesperson, the UN chief described Saturday's violence in Madagascar as "tragic", and extended his deep condolences to the people.
Ban also urged authorities to bring those responsible to justice. Meanwhile, an UN assistant secretary-general for political affairs is in Madagascar to assess the situation.
