Russia opposes a possible tough resolution of the UN Security Council to impose new sanctions against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko says stricter sanctions may backfire.

This could irreparably harm the six-party talks, increase the isolation and anger of the DPRK, and provoke its disproportionate response.
Nesterenko says Russia believes the most appropriate response could be a statement by the Security Council president.
He says the statement should definitely express concern over the launch and call on the DPRK to fully comply with the existing Resolution 1718.
Nesterenko also called for balance and restraint, and an objective analysis of events.
The US Ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, says the five permanent Security Council members and Japan will continue closed-door consultations on the the DPRK's rocket launch. She says their meeting is productive, and their work continues.
