View the total solar eclipse

China witnessed the total solar eclipse on July 22nd,2009. Many eclipse-watchers gathered in cities and regions along the Yangtze River to see the spectacle.This could be an once-in-a-life-time moment for many Chinese.

The process lasted for about four minutes, making it the longest-lasting solar eclipse in the country that scientists say won´t be surpassed in duration until the year 2309.

  • UFO hovers over Chongqing for half an hour

    At about 10 pm on the evening of August 23, a UFO appeared in the sky above Beibei Binjiang Road in Chongqing. The UFO was "V" shaped and its color changed in the order of red, blue, green, yellow and white at short intervals.
    During the half hour that the UFO appeared, a civil airplane passed by. Witnesses compared the civil airplane to the UFO and discovered that the UFO was obviously flying at a higher attitude.

  • "Big Bang" machine experiences first particle collisions

    The four small-scale collisions came just three days after the LHC restart, demonstrating the excellent performance of the beam control system, said CERN, the world´s leading laboratory for particle physics.
    Since the start-up, the operators have been circulating beams around the ring alternately in one direction and then the other at the injection energy of 450 GeV. The beam lifetime has gradually been increased to 10 hours, and on Monday beams have been circulating simultaneously in both directions, still at the injection energy.

  • Defense University builds China´s fastest supercomputer

    The National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) unveiled Thursday China´s fastest supercomputer, which is able to do more than one quadrillion calculations per second theoretically at its peak speed.

  • Water found on the moon

    Preliminary data from the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, or LCROSS, indicated that the mission had successfully uncovered water during the Oct. 9 impacts into the permanently shadowed region of Cabeus crater near the moon´s south pole, NASA said on Friday in a press release.

  • Chang´e-2 satellite to be launched in 2010

    China will launch its second lunar probe satellite at the end of 2010. The satellite, Chang´e-2, will test key soft landing technologies for the Chang´e-3 and provide high-resolution photo images of the landing area.

    China has advanced six key technologies of Chang´e-2, including its lunar capture, orbit control and high-resolution stereo camera.

  • ICANN approves non-Latin script

    The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has approved the use of Chinese, Hindi, Korean and other scripts not based on the Latin alphabet for Internet addresses. The decision is set to make the Web dramatically more inclusive.

    The I-CANN board voted to allow the use of the scripts in domain names at the conclusion of a week-long meeting in the South Korean capital of Seoul.
