Arab foreign ministers will gather for an emergency meeting to discuss a common response to the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip. Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa made the announcement in Cairo on Thursday.

Moussa called the meeting at the request of Palestinian and Lebanese officials to deal with the ongoing Israeli offensive. Some reports put the number killed by Israeli troops at more than 80 Palestinians this month, with more than 50 of those from this past week.

Meanwhile, Palestinian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Zahar has also come to Cairo to discuss the incident with his Egyptian counterpart Ahmed Aboul Gheit. They discussed negotiations regarding Israeli soldier Corporal Gilad Shalit. He was captured by Hamas-linked Palestinian militants in June. That incident triggered a series of Israeli offensives in Palestinian territories.
