The Chinese Foreign Ministry has called on the nations involved in the six-party talks to implement their latest action plan for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea "in a comprehensive and balanced manner".
The second phase of the sixth round of six-party talks ended last Wednesday in Beijing. The parties released a joint document on the action plan for the eventual denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
In the document, the DPRK agreed to disable existing nuclear facilities and declare all nuclear programs by the end of this year.
And the DPRK and the United States confirmed their commitment to improving bilateral relations and moving towards full diplomacy.
Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao said implementing the plan has begun. He said the US will send an expert group to the DPRK to assist in the disabling of nuclear facilities.
Liu said, "In fact, the process to denuclearize the Korean peninsula is divided into several stages. The first stage is denuclearize the peninsula, which is the ultimate goal of the six-party talks. After that, the agenda is to normalize relationships among countries concerned and to gradually establish a peace mechanism in Northeast Asia."
Liu Jianchao also said China will continue to play an important and constructive role in the peace process on the Korean Peninsula. He noted that a peaceful and stable peninsula is in the interest of Korean people, as well as to the region.
