Thousands of supporters of Madagascar's embattled president have gathered in a stadium in the capital Antananarivo.

This comes a day after President Marc Ravalomanana's rival, Andry Rajoelina, held a peaceful rally in the city.

On Tuesday Ravalomanana replaced his army chief. A brief government communique gave no reason for the dismissal.

It's seen as one more sign that political tensions are taking a significant toll on Ravalomanana.
