Russia launched the operation in the restive Caucasus region in 1999.

Russia's operations in Chechnya have led to curfews, limitations on access for journalists and limitations on civilian airline flights.

The termination was ordered by President Dmitry Medvedev and took effect on Thursday morning.

A statement from the National Anti-Terrorist Committee said the decision aims to further normalize the situation in Chechnya, and to restore and develop socioeconomic life there.
